The Iris Project
Through the years, Florida’s firefighters have made great efforts to raise money for our number one charity, The Muscular Dystrophy Association. During this time, we have met a very special young lady who has helped us fight the fight to defeat neuromuscular diseases. Her name is Iris Roberts. This pass November, Miss Iris underwent extensive surgery to install metal rods in her back to prevent the curvature of her spine and the ever increasing pressure on her internal organs. Iris is now recovering at her home to Lake City. Upon returning home, it was noticed that there would need to be improvements made to the home in order for Iris to maintain a decent quality of life. The entire home must now be remodeled so it is handicap accessible. The amount of the renovation is estimated to be around $100,000. Florida’s Firefighters have stepped up to the plate and have started “The Iris Project”, a program to renovate the home. Many firefighters, under the leadership of FPF 9th DVP Jim Tolley, have gathered supplies and have offered to donate time to renovate the home. To date, roughly $7,000 of the estimated $100,000 has been raised. A website has been established for the Iris Project. You can read about Iris, send her an e-mail of support, and even donate a few dollars to the cause.
