Overview of Training
The program is an intense
80 hours of training over 8 days. It begins with an evaluation of diving
skills as part of an underwater stress course. Training during the first three
days will include both classroom and hands-on time with ROV's, side scan sonar,
magnetometers; and EOD on mines. The remaining time will be spent in groups
applying the acquired skills and knowledge to actual underwater port security
scenarios .One day will be spent inside and under large vessels (900 to over
1,000 ft long) learning and applying procedures for lock out-tag out, search,
and officer safety in that hazardous environment. Another day will be spent
doing pier searches on different types of piers. Students will map and plot
the information for hand off to another team. A second full day will be spent
“flying” ROV’s in different water conditions. Finally, two
days are spent on side scan sonar with each team doing searches and plotting
their targets and then diving on the targets. All this information is then
plotted on a master chart and list.
A majority of student
time in this course is spent hands-on and/or underwater. Locating and
inspecting devices are applied to piers and other areas in an active port
setting. Initial training is conducted in areas providing some visibility where
the divers can see what they will encounter before they are put into zero
visibility conditions of the real world.
Students can enroll
individually or as a group. Limited space is available for non-diving personnel
who ordinarily support underwater operations as boat or other equipment
operators or dive tenders.
